State of the Runion

TrackMy fellow runners, parents, friends, and esteemed citizens of this great blog nation:

As executive officer and commander in chief of this domain, it is my duty and privilege to report information to you from time to time on the State of the Runion.

After years of labor and sacrifice, 2013 was a return to greatness.

Thanks to a flexible work environment, stellar training plan, and overwhelming support from friends and family, I made great strides. On both the roads and the trails, I overcame physical and mental obstacles to achieve unprecedented success.

I uncovered profound confidence in my abilities. I rekindled my love for running. I learned that great lessons are found in unexpected outcomes.

I can say, with absolute certainty, that the State of the Runion is stronger than ever.

But our work is never done. It is our ongoing task to strive, not for perfection but for continuous progress. To greet each day with renewed desire. To passionately pursue our goals and dreams.

It’s not an easy task. There are days, weeks, and even months when we feel anything  but passionate. Times when we put in the work without seeing the results. Periods that call for rest and reflection to restore the mind and body.

I haven’t talked about running lately. I haven’t been skirting the issue; there just wasn’t much to say.

I needed to step back. To let my body heal. To reflect on where I’d been and where I want to be.

But it’s a new year. Time to cast aside differences and get back to work. To rally allies and move forward with confidence and purpose.

Join me. Hold me accountable, but more importantly, share in the journey.

Our work begins with basic choices.

As winter and the polar vortex bear down, isolationism becomes increasingly tempting. We cannot succumb to this dangerous doctrine.

To avoid a total shutdown, we must strengthen our underlying, aging infrastructure, starting with a series of diverse initiatives to achieve balance and stability. By targeting our weakest areas, we strengthen the whole.

Think creatively and implement complementary programs, and we avoid physical decline and stagnation.

Address and equalize muscular imbalance, and we prevent injury and setbacks.

Seek and consume the best energy sources, and we properly fuel our bodies for long-term health and success.

Those tasks are easy. The real challenge lies beyond the physical. The real test lies within.

Can we strengthen our spirit? Can we reinforce our will? Can we proceed with courage and determination?

YES!

To do so, we must set new goals, knowing we will often fail to reach them.

We must sweat and sacrifice, knowing the outcome is worth the expense.

We must welcome and embrace adversity, knowing hardship galvanizes the soul.

We must embark on new journeys, knowing the finish line is just the beginning.

If we do this, if we confidently advance toward our dreams despite setbacks, failures, and disappointments, we will succeed beyond our wildest dreams.

This power lives within each of us. Whether running is your particular passion or not, this ability, this confidence and love, are innate to us all.

There is no limit to our potential if we just believe.

Yes, the State of the Runion is stronger than ever. So join me, my friends. Let’s realize our dreams together.

What would you say in your State of the Runion speech?
